Neidig 4th grade and 5th grade PBIS winners smile with Mr. Godshalk

At Neidig, students learn the "Neidig Promise": "As good leaders of Neidig Elementary School, we will be Respectful, Responsible, and Safe. We are in charge of our own learning!"

This promise is part of Neidig’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Program, an evidence-based, tiered framework that supports students’ behavioral, academic, social, and emotional well-being. When applied effectively, PBIS can create a learning environment where all students can thrive.

This past month, fourth- and fifth-grade students focused on learning how to be assertive. Students reviewed different scenarios and discussed appropriate ways to respond. One scenario asked, “What do you do if your friend group wants you to stop being friends with someone?” Students discussed and shared; the assertive choice was to respectfully explain that they can be friends with whomever they choose.

Another scenario asked, “What if someone says they don’t like your clothes but claims they were just kidding?” Students responded that "while it may have been intended as a joke, it still hurt their feelings, and they would like comments like that to stop.

Students learned that being assertive does not mean being rude. Instead, it means being honest, respectful, and responsible for expressing your thoughts and feelings.

At this month’s PBIS assembly, one student from each fourth and fifth-grade class was recognized for demonstrating assertiveness throughout April.
